Reading 1: Deuteronomy 26:16-19
In this passage, Moses reminds the Israelites of their covenant with God. They are called to observe His commandments wholeheartedly, securing their place as His sacred people. This is not just about following laws—it’s about a relationship of love and faithfulness.
God desires not just external obedience but a commitment that stems from the heart. When we walk in His ways, He elevates us, giving us an identity rooted in holiness.
Gospel: Matthew 5:43-48
Jesus expands upon the commandment of love, challenging His followers to extend love even to their enemies. Loving only those who love us is human nature, but divine love calls us to go beyond.
This radical love reflects God’s perfection. He showers grace upon both the just and unjust, teaching us that our love must mirror His—unconditional, merciful, and boundless.
Living Out the Message
- Wholehearted Obedience – Lent is a time to examine our faithfulness to God’s will. Are we obeying Him out of love or obligation?
- Loving Our Enemies – True Christian love extends beyond comfort zones. Who in our lives needs our forgiveness and prayers?
- Striving for Perfection – Jesus calls us to be “perfect.” While we may never reach divine perfection, our goal should always be to reflect God’s love more fully.
